Menu Builder

A tool for building list menus with images. The tool builds some text that you copy into your Shortcut, and then with a few actions you will have a list containing images that can be used as a menu.

New - Quick menus just send a text action with Title,Subtitle,Icon name and use Run Shortcut to quickly add an icon menu to a Shortcut Demo (requires Menu Builder being installed) Just for when you want to easily/quickly add a menu to a Shortcut without messing around with vcards.

New - will detect if you have vcards on the clipboard when launched,so that you can add additional items to your menus, or continue where you left off.

Text Action - Copy the text from menu builder into here
Set Name : Menu.vcf
Get Variable : Set Name < Use a magic variable to point to the set name, and then select and change the type to contact

No, unfortunately not. Menus can only be used with choose from menu. Would be nice if a Case statement is added to Shortcuts in future.

I did a quick and dirty tweak to allow you to bulk create a menu items from image files using the file name for each file as the menu item. Also added the option to save it as a .vcf file as an alternate option rather than to the clipboard as well. https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/a6882dcaa527483a9841b67ed45bd2a2 I didn't try to refine the workflow, but I think you could merge it in pretty easily. Much less friction than individually if you already have the images ready.

Hi I've added a Get Name so that any file name is used as a default for the menu title so its more of a click through if you've done the prep work. How do you deal with ordering, and subtitling?

You can make color icons and choose colours with Quick Icon Maker, or http://fa2png.io is a good online tool where you will also be able to make coloured transparent icons.

So you know, your check for updates support will reset the check for updates dictionary because you put Get File "AutoUpdate.json" instead of "AutoUpdateData.json". In the next CFU version there will be a new format for adding cfu support that makes it harder to accidentally overwrite other people's shortcuts there.

Thanks for pointing out, but wouldnt this just create a second unsued dictionary, not reset any dictionaries, which wouldnt break updates for everything else. Thats great news, but as per my previous comment its really disappointing that other people can completely break the dictionary for other people with eg malformed dictionary keys I forget the exact reason something like Name/Version was used rather than name/version, more robustness and error checking would be great to see.

CFU 2.0 is released and much more robust. There's also a new optional format that makes it even harder to mess up. It also throws detailed errors when sething goes wrong.

Hi sorry not sure what happened with image size it was completely missing. I have no idea what your trying to do with Shlecks shortcut but you dont need to do anything with anyone elses shortcut in order to use it, or crreate menu/lists.

I can’t actually get the shortcut because with ios 13, you have to scroll all through the shortcut then press add untrusted shortcut. If i try scrolling through it, it freezes. I have ios 13 beta 4

Works for me, I've downloaded, scrolled and added, it froze for about 1.5 seconds at the top but continued. On other Shortcuts I've seen freezing, but it unfreezes. I had a bit of an issue with earlier betas, mainly around scrolling in the editor, it has improved with successive betas.

I just updated menu builder and now it doesn’t work anymore, worked fine in the previous version. When pressing menu option two, “Add”, it takes bout two-three seconds and then the menu comes back. Nothing happens. I never get the option to add images, nothing at all happens except getting back to the same menu.

I’m using an iPhone XS Max and also iPad Pro, using Swedish language. I haven’t renamed the shortcut. Regarding the title, do you mean the title of the shortcut? The shortcut name in my list of shortcuts? If so, no. I had the previous version and it was working fine. Yesterday I started it and got prompted that there was a new version and I should update. So I did and when starting it afterwards nothing happens when pressing “Add” in the menu.

Ok it’s a language issue. Where IF type is dictionary is used. Your can replace it with the Swedish shortcuts word for dictionary as a workaround until I build international support into it, or download the earlier version.

1) Am trying to use set variable in place of "get variable" from your help section to call out the menu but when I change the variable type to "contact", the app itself doesn't save the change and the placeholder there either turns the variable to a blank field or back to when it was a "text" variable. How do I fix this? 2) the demo shortcut link within this shortcut doesn't bring up the "get shortcut" page. Not sure why, so I ended having to come to this webpage to load the demo shortcut.

I got it to work by deleting and downloading it multiple times. Although the only issue I have is having the icons flipped upside down. I had a upward facing arrow and it came out facing down.

When scrolling through the code and passing the text box with all the contact menu items, there is a major lag spike. I think you could reduce this by migrating the text into a dictionary within a dictionary, then calling on that in a text box right after, allowing everything else to remain the same. Though I’m not sure whether this will actually work, it might be worth a shot.

I was thinking it would never work because the Shortcut still had to load all the png Font assets contained in the text, and the dictionary action used to be really buggy when adding large entries, but no it does seem to work, still a slight delay but much easier. Thanks.

Ah. Actually maybe I spoke too soon, still lags sometimes, but then again bigger shortcuts do anyway especially in 13. Its a while since I scrolled through it, seems better anyway.

Huh. I was never able to see if it would work because I’m on my phone, which doesn’t have enough space allocated to the clipboard to test transferring the text into a dictionary. It was worth a shot though.

Although settings changes are reflected in the subtitle on the main menu, the default preferences (i.e., subtitles: ON & image size: 100) are still used when adding new menu items regardless of what either are changed to.

You can get variable within the choose from list action, just set that to contacts.

I am having an issue on iPadOS 13.1.2 and iOS 13.3 when running this, it does not save the VCard to the clipboard and does not show an alert that I have one saved to he clipboard

I just downloaded this version and when I finished and pressed cancel the vcard text was on the clipboard. It’s not designed to give an alert as cancel exits the shortcut.

I dont understand what you mean by got the vcard to come up. ? You added an item to the menu? and it took several minutes to add to the menu? Every time you add an item to the menu its copied to the clipboard as text, every time a new item is added its copied to the clipboard as text

Somehow, the fonts are upside down. Even after reinstalling the shortcut. It was fine a week ago. So if choose this ⬆ The output is ⬇️ I didn't edit anything. Pretty weird? Excellent shortcut tho!

That was only happening with a certain version of iOS, some 13 betas and something like 13.2 . https://www.reddit.com/r/shortcuts/comments/dvshyz/gif_upside_down/ If its not working on a version of iOS you have installed either update or put a rotate action in the Shortcut. "Fixing" it would break it for others
