Embed-a-update is an updater like no other. Instead of requiring users download an extra shortcut to update yours, embed-a-update is embedded directly into your shortcut.

Why?

There are so many different updaters, all requiring people to download a different shortcut just to check for updates. Why not have an updater that doesn't require any downloads?

Embed-a-Update is an updater that gets embedded inside your shortcut. When people run your shortcut, even if it's the only shortcut they have installed, it just works.

Embed-a-update only takes 40 actions to use in your shortcut. This shortcut can be used to automatically add those actions.

How to use (For shortcuts built in the shortcuts app)

Add an action to your shortcut

Comment "[[Embed-a-Here]]"

Run Embed-a-Update and choose your shortcut.

Your shortcut now has Embed-a-update embedded in it. It is helpfully surrounded with a repeat action to make moving and removing it easier.

Make a copy of your shortcut before running embed-a-update on it. While it shouldn't cause any problems, there is always a chance when editing .shortcut files that it could not work properly and damage your shortcut.

Make sure to remove any previous Embed-a-Update related actions if you had any before running Embed-a-Update on your shortcut. Because Embed-a-Update hardcodes unique IDs, running twice might cause shortcuts to use the same ID twice.

Customization

You can customize anything you want in Embed-a-Update. Show errors when the shortcut fails to update, force all users to update instead of giving a choice. You are not required to keep the [Eᴍʙᴇᴅ-ᴀ-Uᴘᴅᴀᴛᴇ] label, feel free to remove it if you wish.

Thank you so much for this updater, I immediately changed all my shortcuts to integrate this. Easily one of the best shortcuts I have ever used! Feature request: Is it possible to show the text of the "New in version" release notes in the prompt menu when there is a new update available?

Added. To update your embed, delete all the actions from it, add back the comment, and run embed-a-update again.

Found a little bug. When I run my shortcut (which accepts Safari webpages and URLs) from the Shortcuts Widget it says that there is a blank Shortcut Input, but the Widget cannot add Safari webpages and URLs as an input. Turned out to be that the "Get Contents of Webpage at (URL) action in your shortcut caused this. I fixed this by replacing that action with the "Make HTML from Rich Text (URL)”, and a "Match" action with regex (?<=span class=".\w">).*(?=<\/.\w) and (Get Text from Input) after.

I think there is also some method using get object of class that might not require the Match Text action. I want to keep the default updater as simple as possible so that shortcut updates don't break it somehow, but I might try and add in widget support using either your workaround or the get object of class workaround.

Theres a phrase Update checking with [Embed-a-Update] which appears in the rollback/update available message in unicode which doesn't seem to appear in the Shortcut, so I guess is embedded in the plist somewhere which is clever and stuff, but could it be not be in unicode, unicode sucks for accessiblity and just reads as EU in voiceover.

Hey, I stand by my previous comment, but I found a bug: has trouble displaying change-logs of over ~951 ish characters. Is this a shortcuts issue, or can it be fixed?
